I once had someone tell me they went with another designer because I didn't have enough illustration experience. This made my jaw drop, since I've been illustrating longer than I've been designing (for as long as I can remember, in fact). After the initial shock, I realized that was my fault. My portfolio showcased all kinds of clean minimalist work, and yet it neglected to show my wild illustrative side. No longer.
